We’ll be by your side on every step of your journey with cancer, which means you can make decisions with confidence.

The right prognosis, for the right treatment plan .

Getting the right treatment starts with an accurate diagnosis and precise staging to provide an accurate prognosis. We use superior diagnostic tools to map out your cancer with precision. High-quality imaging, such as high-definition MRI and disease-specific PET scanning, allow us to fine-tune your diagnosis, ensuring treatment is tailored specifically to you.

Your team at Mayo Clinic will also consider your age, disease stage, existing health conditions, family history, and your cancer’s unique genetic features, as well as more common cancer-specific factors such as PSA and Gleason score. This wholistic evaluation will help your team understand what matters most to you, so they can council you toward the best options for your specific point on this journey.

Mayo Clinic is a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. This recognition reflects our scientific excellence in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. At Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, you’ll have access to the most promising innovations through clinical trials and more, including chemotherapy, hormone therapy, ablative therapy, immunotherapy, targeted drug therapy, radiation and robotic prostate surgery, an area Mayo Clinic is pioneering.

Surgical options including single-port prostatectomy.

For many people, prostate cancer is diagnosed before it has metastasized. Removing the tumor surgically can provide a cure, especially if the cancer has stayed within the prostate.  At Mayo Clinic, world-renowned surgeons use state-of-the-art technologies and techniques to fight cancer and are innovating new surgical approaches to prostate removal. These approaches are designed to reduce the side-effects commonly seen with prostate surgery.

Surgical innovations include:

  • The latest surgical robotics which help our skilled surgeons provide more complete tumor removal, faster recovery, and improved cosmetic outcomes
  • Innovative surgical approaches including pelvic fascia sparing prostatectomy which offers benefits like improved urinary continence, potential for better erectile function and a faster recovery of urinary function compared to standard radical prostatectomy
  • Advanced imaging such as intraoperative fluorescence to identify cancerous tissue, allowing for more precise removal of cancerous tissue while preserving healthy tissue and reducing risk of recurrence

The latest advancements in robotic technology allow some patients with localized prostate cancer to have single-port surgery. This type of surgery involves only one incision, which means you can have a faster recovery with less pain and a shorter stay at the hospital, some even on the same day as the procedure.

Mayo Clinic’s excellence and innovation doesn't stop in the operating room. Patients undergoing outpatient radical prostatectomy can be enrolled in a program called Care Hotel at Charter House, which offers patients accommodation in a well-equipped guest apartment on Mayo Clinic’s campus, assistance from Mayo Clinic’s highly skilled and licensed nurses and skyway and subway access to the hospital. From here, patients are able to reach out to their doctor at any moment and for eligible patients, a one-night stay is provided at no cost.
