Achalasia Treatment by Surgery Experts at Mayo Clinic

Mayo Clinic offers expert, minimally invasive surgical and endoscopic treatments for achalasia (type 1-3) and esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction (EGJOO).

Our thoracic surgeons specialize in minimally invasive surgical options to improve swallowing ability and enable you to progress to eating a variety of foods. We work with you to determine which procedure is right for you and will tailor treatment to meet your individual needs.

Experts in minimally invasive surgery options.

Laparoscopic Heller myotomy. This surgery can be done using a minimally invasive technique. It involves cutting the muscle at the lower end of the esophageal sphincter to allow food to pass more easily into the stomach.

Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM). In this procedure, an endoscope is inserted through the mouth and down the throat to create an incision in the inside lining of the esophagus. Then the surgeon cuts the muscle at the lower end of the esophageal sphincter.

Fundoplication. Your surgeon might also do this procedure during your surgery to avoid future problems with GERD. The surgeon wraps the top of the stomach around the lower esophagus to create an anti-reflux valve to prevent acid from coming back into the esophagus.
