Experts in Adrenal Disease, Centered Around You
Adrenal tumors can be exceptionally complex to diagnose and treat, requiring expertise in surgery, medical endocrinology, radiology and more. At Mayo Clinic, you will have an experienced multidisciplinary team of experts in adrenal tumors working together to provide you with the right answers and best possible treatment.
Tumors we treat include:
- Aldosteronoma (aldosterone producing tumors)
- Benign, non-functional tumors when they are large enough to cause symptoms
- Cancerous tumors of the adrenal gland
- Cortisol producing tumors
- Paraganglioma, a tumor similar to pheochromocytoma that arises outside of the adrenal gland and may produce adrenaline.
- Pheochromocytoma (adrenaline producing tumors)
- Suspicious adrenal nodules (large size or imaging findings that may be suspicious for malignancy)
Our centralized, highly skilled, experienced multidisciplinary team of specialists work together to achieve the best possible outcomes for you. The team includes:
- Specialized endocrinologists who focus solely on adrenal disease and are experts in diagnosing and treating diseases of the adrenal glands.
- Fellowship trained endocrine surgeons who perform a very high volume of adrenal operations, utilizing the most advanced surgical technology and minimally invasive techniques. The endocrine surgeons offer the full spectrum of surgical approaches to resection of adrenal tumors and can tailor the approach to the specific circumstances of the patient to provide the best outcome.
- A radiology team experienced in offering the entire spectrum of high-quality imaging available, enabling us to precisely identify the tumor, localize it, and tailor the treatment.
- A multidisciplinary adrenal tumor board including all of the above specialties that may review your specific situation and provide a consensus recommendation.
Many people travel to Mayo Clinic for evaluation and treatment for adrenal tumors. We’re able to provide a compressed itinerary so appointments and treatment can often be done in a single trip.
Advanced diagnosis and treatment.
We combine highly specialized knowledge with deep experience to provide precise diagnosis and treatment. Our approach includes:
- Frozen section to rapidly diagnose tumors and provide precise treatment. During surgery, right after a tumor is removed, Mayo Clinic pathologists rapidly diagnose the tumor under a microscope in a lab near the operating room. This expert collaboration enables surgeons to accurately plan the next steps in your surgery and treatment – and to discuss them with your loved ones while you are in surgery, and with you in while you’re in recovery.
- Interventional radiology by a high-volume expert in adrenal venous sampling. Due to our expertise and experience, our success rate is over 95% with adrenal venous sampling, which is a highly specialized procedure to determine if certain tumors are in the right or left adrenal gland.
- All surgical approaches are available, so you receive exactly the right treatment for you. There’s no one right approach for everyone. Your adrenal surgeons will tailor the approach to both you and your adrenal tumor. We provide laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, retro peritoneoscopic surgery (from the back), and open adrenal surgery if indicated.
- Adrenal surgery teams who perform a high volume of procedures. Adrenal surgeons who perform many procedures are likely to produce better outcomes than those who do procedures infrequently. At Mayo Clinic, we have endocrinologists who focus on adrenal disease working with high-volume surgeons who operate on complex adrenal tumors frequently.
