Take Control of Your Health With Bariatric Surgery Centered Around You.

Every person’s weight loss journey is unique. That’s why Mayo Clinic provides an expert team centered around you. If you are a person with obesity and are unable to maintain weight loss, you may qualify for bariatric or weight loss surgery.

Bariatric surgery has transformed lives, helping people manage conditions like excess weight, diabetes, sleep apnea, and heart disease. For severe obesity, it is the most effective and lasting method to lose weight and keep it off.

Evidence-based practice.

Our program isn't focused on any single therapy or procedure. Your care is driven by your needs, current symptoms, and history, combined with our deep experience. We explore and explain the advantages of different medical options to achieve the best outcomes in your weight loss journey.

Our skilled team will work with you to create a personalized care plan and support you throughout this life-changing journey.

Qualifying conditions.

If you and your care team determine bariatric surgery is the best option for you, qualifying conditions include, but are not limited to:

  • Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher.
  • BMI of at least 35 and a weight-related disease such as high blood pressure, gastroesophageal reflux disease, diabetes, heart disease, or sleep apnea.

Collaborative care for pre-surgical weight loss.

Many patients come to us needing significant weight reduction to qualify for specific surgeries. We regularly care for patients with upcoming spine, orthopedic, cardiac, kidney, or liver transplant surgeries who must lose weight before safely undergoing those procedures.

Mayo Clinic treats your entire range of medical needs, from weight loss to surgical procedures and postoperative care.

Rare skill and capacity to treat those in specific risk groups.

Mayo Clinic specializes in correcting issues from previous bariatric surgeries. We also may provide surgeries to people with complicated medical histories who may not have qualified at other bariatric centers.

We have extensive, successful experience treating people who need specific medical procedures but whose weight places them in an unacceptable risk category. This includes people with unacceptably high BMI measures or other identified risks who need organ transplant.

Options for the right solution.

Your team offers personalized surgical treatment options tailored to each individual's needs, including but not limited to:

This procedure removes about 80% of the stomach, restricting food intake and decreasing hunger. Patients typically lose about 30% of their total weight.

This procedure reduces the stomach to the size of an egg and reshapes the bowel to absorb less food, significantly decreasing hunger. Patients typically lose 30-35% of their total weight.

This procedure combines sleeve gastrectomy with extensive bowel reshaping, resulting in about 40% weight loss. It is generally reserved for individuals with a BMI over 50 kg/m2 or as determined by your medical team.
