Mayo Clinic doctors are experts in all treatments, from targeted therapies to complex brain surgeries. Treatment may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, clinical trials or a combination of treatments.

We use innovative, noninvasive imaging technology, including:

  • 3D magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), a technique invented at Mayo Clinic that is used to improve brain tumor surgery options.
  • MRI perfusion and spectroscopy
  • CT myelography
  • 7 – Tesla MRI. This imaging system uses a stronger magnetic field to produce more detailed images of the body's interior. Detailed brain scans help Mayo Clinic care teams diagnose and treat patients with brain tumors. This advanced imaging technology is key to ensuring patients receive an accurate diagnosis to guide treatment.

We offer advanced therapies available at few medical institutions. These include:

  • Proton therapy. Proton beams, unlike X-rays, do not travel beyond the tumor, so radiation is delivered to the tumor while protecting nearby healthy tissue. This therapy is offered at the Rochester and Phoenix locations and is coming to the Jacksonville location in 2026.
  • Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT). A long tube (catheter) is used to advance a laser into the brain to destroy cancerous tissue with heat.
  • Operating rooms for brain surgery, equipped with intraoperative MRI. This creates accurate brain images that guide the neurosurgeon in removing only tumor tissue, while protecting healthy brain tissue to help preserve hearing, language, and other brain functions.
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery. This is used to treat many brain metastases, including widely spaced tumors, often in a single treatment session.

Seeing the unseeable with new imaging technology

This image displays the radiology scanned imaging from a 3 Tesla MRI. The 3 Tesla MRI, while using a less powerful magnetic field compared to the 7 Tesla MRI, still provides clear and detailed images of the body's interior. It is commonly used in clinical settings to diagnose and monitor various medical conditions, offering valuable insights for patient care and treatment planning. However, the clarity of the images produced by the 3 Tesla MRI is not as high as that of the 7 Tesla MRI, which can impact the level of detail visible in the scans.

This image showcases the radiology scanned imaging from a 7 Tesla MRI. The 7 Tesla MRI uses a stronger magnetic field to produce highly detailed images of the body's interior. The detailed brain scans generated by this advanced imaging system assist Mayo Clinic care teams in diagnosing and treating patients with brain tumors. This cutting-edge technology is crucial for ensuring patients receive accurate diagnoses, which guide effective treatment plans.
