Choose Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, for the latest surgical treatments and expertise in esophageal cancer. Our team works with you to understand your unique needs and goals so you have confidence in each step of your treatment journey.
We specialize in complex esophageal reconstruction surgery, and Mayo Clinic is one of the only centers in the world performing long-segment supercharged (vascular augmentation) pedicled jejunal interposition for esophageal replacement.
At Mayo Clinic, our experts are:
- Performing minimally invasive esophagectomy.
- Conducting novel clinical trials including use of immunotherapy and abbreviated radiation treatments.
- Studying the role of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) to help with understanding prognosis and response to therapy.
Minimally invasive and complex surgery options.
Mayo Clinic is a high-volume center with extensive experience in esophagectomy. This is a surgery that removes all or part of the swallowing tube between the mouth and stomach and reconstructs it with part of the stomach or other organ (including small bowel or colon). We routinely perform this minimally invasive surgery, often resulting in less pain, a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.
Esophagectomy may be used to treat:
- Advanced esophageal cancer.
- Early-stage esophageal cancer not amenable to endoscopic resectional techniques.
- Noncancerous conditions when prior attempts to save the esophagus have failed.
Unparalleled expertise.
At Mayo Clinic, you’ll have a whole team of specialists in thoracic surgery, digestive diseases, oncology and other areas working together to provide the best treatment for you. Our multidisciplinary esophageal tumor board also brings together even more experts to discuss the best treatment approach for you. Our doctors are also researchers and innovators. Our patients may be eligible for clinical trials.
We perform about 130 esophagectomies each year, ranking among the most in the country. Studies have shown surgical survival and outcomes to be better for people who had their procedure at a high-volume center such as Mayo Clinic.
