We have a wealth of people who are invested in the care of transplant patients to help take care of them. We treat our patients like family. Like what I would do for my mom or my brother or my dad. Heart failure is a progressive disease. More times than not, over the course of years, patients will continue to get worse and worse, whereas they had been on good doses of medical therapy for their heart failure. Now these patients are really struggling, But there are several common conditions that lead to heart transplants. Probably the most common condition is the development of heart failure due to blockages in the heart. So if somebody had a myocardial infarction, which is a heart attack, that can actually damage portions of the heart, and sometimes that damage is actually reversible, but sometimes it's not.
We take care of patients who, for various reasons, have heart muscles that don't pump blood adequately to their bodies. They're people with ischemic cardiomyopathies, meaning that they have blocked arteries that lead to heart failure. They're patients that sometimes have had viral illnesses that have affected their heart muscles. A patient who has end stage kidney disease or end stage liver disease, concomitant with end stage heart disease, need to be considered for dual organ transplantation. We are in the unique position to complete multi organ transplants here at Mayo Clinic because we have the expertise and specialty of multiple groups within organ transplantation. Once patients are listed, we want to get them transplanted in a timely fashion. We say that there's never too soon for a patient to come here. Whether it's a innovative approach to treatment, electrical problems of the heart, there's always something we can do. Referring physicians and patients alike should know that they're going to be well taken care of here. You've got a team of individuals who genuinely care about the well being of the patient.
