Our surgeons regularly perform highly complex surgeries for kidney cancer, so you can feel confident you’re in expert hands.

- Safer complex surgeries. Our team has vast experience in intricate surgeries and removing tumors intertwined with blood vessels. More surgical experience means better outcomes and survival rates.
- Surgery for advanced disease. From inoperable to operable. Because of Mayo Clinic’s extensive experience and expertise, we can often treat people for kidney tumors that were considered inoperable elsewhere. At Mayo Clinic in Arizona, multiple specialists assist with complex surgeries involving the largest blood vessels in the body, the aorta and vena cava.
- Minimally invasive intervention. Our team has a long history of pioneering and refining minimally invasive procedures that can offer shorter recovery times. These operations are usually performed using cutting-edge robotics or through laparoscopic (keyhole) incisions.
- Excellent pain management. We use less invasive techniques to minimize pain. We also adhere to Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) to ensure adequate pain control while optimizing a rapid recovery.
- Multidisciplinary care. Our surgical team is supported by multiple other teams that can significantly contribute to the success of kidney surgery. This includes our nursing and administrative staff, who help with surgery preparation and post-operative care. We also have a strong history of collaboration with medical oncology to combine surgical and medical management.
- Ablative treatment. Some kidney cancers do not require surgery. At Mayo Clinic in Arizona, our experienced radiologists can treat some tumors with ablation under image guidance. These procedures are less invasive and involve inserting a small probe through the skin into the tumor to freeze or ablate the tumor.
