Our Living Kidney Donor Program offers a comprehensive support system tailored to the needs of each donor, from initial consultation through recovery and beyond. We are the only center in Arizona offering paired kidney exchange in partnership with the National Kidney Registry.

Living kidney donors help meet the desperate needs of transplant patients who often have endured long waits for deceased kidney donors. Unfortunately, the number of people waiting for a transplant still far exceeds the number of donors.

• Less time spent on a waiting list, which could prevent possible complications and deterioration of health of the recipient
• Potential avoidance of dialysis if it has not been initiated

• A transplant may be scheduled in advance once the living donor is approved versus an unscheduled, emergency transplant procedure with a deceased donor kidney

Mayo Clinic has one of the largest living kidney donor programs in the United States. Across our three sites, Mayo Clinic surgeons have performed more than 16,500 kidney transplants. We currently perform about 1,000 kidney transplants each year, including many from living kidney donors.

Mayo Clinic surgeons have extensive expertise with all types of living-donor transplant surgeries, including minimally invasive donor surgery, reconstruction for complex-anatomy living donor kidney allografts, paired-kidney donation, simultaneous kidney transplantation and native nephrectomy surgery for polycystic kidney disease patients, and other complex procedures.

Mayo Clinic transplant researchers take a leading role in efforts to find new, improved ways to conduct all aspects of transplantation, improve the experience of donation, reduce risks and improve the outcomes of transplantation.
