Give the Gift of Life as a Living Kidney Donor
If you are considering being a living kidney donor, Mayo Clinic in Arizona can answer your questions. We performed more than 100 living donor transplants last year and are a Donor Care Network Center of Excellence. We recognize the extraordinary gift living kidney donors provide.
Our Living Kidney Donor Program offers a comprehensive support system tailored to the needs of each donor, from initial consultation through recovery and beyond. We are the only center in Arizona offering paired kidney exchange in partnership with the National Kidney Registry.
Living kidney donors help meet the desperate needs of transplant patients who often have endured long waits for deceased kidney donors. Unfortunately, the number of people waiting for a transplant still far exceeds the number of donors.
Benefits of living kidney donation
Patients that require a kidney transplant can greatly benefit from your extraordinary gift. Compared with deceased-donor kidney transplant, the benefits of living-donor kidney transplant include:
- Less time spent on a waiting list, which could prevent possible complications and deterioration of health of the recipient
- Potential avoidance of dialysis if it has not been initiated
- Better short- and long-term survival rates
- A transplant may be scheduled in advance once the living donor is approved versus an unscheduled, emergency transplant procedure with a deceased donor kidney
