Our Living Kidney Donor Program in Rochester, Minnesota, offers a comprehensive support system tailored to the needs of each donor, from initial consultation through recovery and beyond.

Living kidney donors help meet the desperate needs of transplant patients who often have endured long waits for a kidney from a deceased donor. Unfortunately, the number of people waiting for a transplant still far exceeds the number of donors.

People who require a kidney transplant can greatly benefit from your extraordinary gift. Compared with deceased-donor kidney transplant, the benefits of living-donor kidney transplant include:

• Less time spent on a waiting list, which could prevent possible complications and deterioration of the recipient’s health
• Potential avoidance of dialysis if it has not been initiated
• Better short- and long-term survival rates
• A transplant may be scheduled in advance once the living donor is approved versus an unscheduled, emergency transplant procedure with a deceased donor kidney.

Mayo Clinic has one of the largest living kidney donor programs in the United States. Across our three sites, Mayo Clinic surgeons have performed more than 16,500 kidney transplants. We currently perform about 1,000 kidney transplants each year, including many from living kidney donors.

At Mayo Clinic we are always looking for ways to expand the eligible living kidney donor pool. Now, following strict criteria, some patients with Type 2 diabetes or controlled hypertension may be eligible to help close the gap on this ever-growing need for living kidney donors. 

Our surgeons have extensive expertise with all types of living-donor transplant surgeries, including laparoscopic nephrectomy, paired-organ donation and other complex procedures.
