Seeking Specialty Care for Multiple Myeloma - Rafeal Fonseca, M.D., Mayo Clinic
I would tell the person, I think, and this is in no way self-serving, that is critically important they see a specialist in myeloma. A provider, an oncology provider, a physician who's in a small practice in a rural location, for instance, has to keep the knowledge of everything there is in oncology. And that is a very rapidly changing field. So, they have to be able to know how to treat best breast cancer, and colon cancer, and lung cancer. And it's simply, and it's impossible, humanly impossible for them to be up to speed on everything that's going on in the field of myeloma. And all of those details matter. And they matter a lot for outcomes for depth of response, for the management of toxicity and so forth. Now, not everyone can do that consistently, but at least at some point they should involve a Center of Excellence so they can get some guidance regarding the planning of their treatment, their goals. And then most of the care can be provided very well in that community setting. But, I think it's to a patient's advantage to go to a referral center when they have received a diagnosis.
