At Mayo Clinic, our team of specialists are dedicated to providing advanced, expert treatment for conditions of the brain, spine and nervous system. We utilize advanced diagnostic tools, new techniques, innovative therapies and clinical trials developed by world-class experts to provide you with an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plans. Our approach is built on collaboration, ensuring that you benefit from the expertise of multiple specialists working together seamlessly.

Your care team may include neurologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, otolaryngologists, orthopedic oncologists, radiologists, anesthesiologists, endocrinologists, rehabilitation specialists, pain medicine specialists, radiation oncologists, and other experts as needed based on your condition. This integrated approach means that there are no 'walls' between specialties at Mayo Clinic. Our practices are designed to facilitate quick and seamless collaboration, so you receive comprehensive care from a team of specialists rather than just one.

Subspecialized care is a hallmark of Mayo Clinic, where high volumes of cases mean that rare conditions are not rare to us. Our team is likely to have seen and treated numerous cases of even the most uncommon conditions, providing you with unparalleled expertise. Our subspecialized care also encompasses neuroradiologists who specialize in neurologic conditions. Their extensive experience in reviewing radiology scans for neurology and neurosurgery sets them apart. More than 200 Mayo Clinic neurology experts provide diagnosis and care for over 500 conditions, including the serious, rare or complex, and help more than 100,000 adults and children each year. Mayo Clinic’s world-renowned neurosurgeons perform more than 9,300 surgeries each year.

Our team of doctors have deep expertise in a variety of conditions, including epilepsy, autoimmune neurology, aneurysms, movement disorders, brain and spinal cord tumors, multiple sclerosis, headache, neuromuscular diseases, peripheral nerve disorders, and other neurological disorders for both adult and pediatric patients.

Pushing the boundaries of diagnosis.

At Mayo Clinic, you don’t just get the benefit of coordinated care with world class experts. You also get access to advanced diagnostics through Mayo Clinic Laboratories. Mayo Clinic Laboratories develops new testing approaches for the rarest and most complex neurological conditions, allowing our doctors to develop clinically validated testing that delivers actionable answers for you and your loved ones. Our neurological scientists have developed diagnostic tests that discovered new conditions. Some of these diagnostic tests are only available at Mayo Clinic.

Coordinated, comprehensive care.

We know time is crucial when facing a neurological diagnosis, and that many of our patients are traveling to one of our campuses to seek care away from their homes. What might take months to complete elsewhere can often be done in days at Mayo Clinic. Your team of experts will plan and coordinate comprehensive care for an efficient visit that maximizes your time on campus. Test results are available quickly and your appointment schedules are coordinated for you. You will have a comprehensive care plan that includes any care at Mayo Clinic and collaboration of care with your home physicians for when you travel back home.

Advanced technologies, innovative treatments and targeted approaches.

We use targeted and minimally invasive approaches when planning your care that allows for higher precision, lower complication rates, shorter recovery time, and improved quality of life.

We can perform neurophysiological monitoring of the brain, spinal cord, cranial nerves and other functions during surgery. This creates accurate brain images that guide the neurosurgeon in removing only tumor tissue, while protecting healthy brain tissue to help preserve hearing, language, and other brain functions.

This includes Gamma Knife®, which delivers a high dose of radiation to a very small area of the brain. This is used to treat many brain metastases, including widely spaced tumors, often in a single treatment session.

Mayo Clinic is one of only a few medical centers in the country to offer awake brain surgery. This approach is used to remove complex tumors safely in a way that lowers the risk to speech and other vital functions.

Robotic surgery allows doctors to perform many types of complex procedures – often using tiny incisions – with more precision, flexibility and control than is possible with traditional procedures.

We can create a 3D model of the brain using specialized fusion software that allows the use of multiple types of imaging such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), intraoperative MRI, computerized tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) scans. This model can be used for planning surgeries and for precisely guiding surgeons during procedures.

Electrodes are implanted within areas of the brain to produce electrical impulses that affect brain activity to treat certain conditions. The amount of stimulation is controlled by a pacemaker-like device placed under the skin in the upper chest. A wire that travels under the skin connects this device to the electrodes.

MEG measures the magnetic fields produced by brain activity. This helps our experts find potential areas where seizures start. MEG can be more accurate than EEG because the skull and tissue surrounding the brain interfere less with magnetic fields. MEG and MRI together provide images that show areas of the brain both affected by seizures and not affected by seizures.

This imaging system uses a stronger magnetic field to produce more detailed images of the body's interiors and is key to ensuring an accurate diagnosis to guide treatment.  It can create images of such detail that it can pinpoint the smallest defects — in some cases, those causing seizures.

This technology delivers precise radiotherapy to the tumor with less radiation to the surrounding brain tissue.

Specialized care for children and adolescents.

In Minnesota, pediatric neurologists and neurosurgeons provide high-quality, comprehensive neurosurgical services collaborating with other pediatric specialists in coordinated care for serious and complex conditions including epilepsy, cerebral palsy, spina bifida and fetal defects.

Children seen in the Pediatric Brain Tumor Clinic might have a team that also includes neuropsychologists, neuroradiologists, neuropathologists and others as needed.

Children who need care in a hospital may go to Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Nurses there are trained in treating children and adolescents with neurological conditions. Child life specialists help you and your child deal with natural concerns about illness, medical procedures and hospital care.
