Pectus Excavatum Treatment Centered Around You

At Mayo Clinic Children’s, we prioritize patients' and families' needs in all aspects of treatment, recovery, and quality of life. You’ll have an entire team of pediatric specialists working with you to develop a care plan that’s right for your child’s unique needs.

We’re with you every step of the way.

Pectus excavatum, sometimes called sunken chest, can range from mild impacting primarily appearance, to moderate or severe, make breathing and exercising difficult, adversely impacting day-to-day living. At Mayo Clinic, we work to understand your ideal outcome, giving your child the best opportunity thrive after treatment.

Innovation focused on outcomes, safety and pain management.

We specialize in minimally invasive diagnostics and treatment, reducing discomfort and recovery times. Using a treatment called a Nuss procedure, the sternum is moved forward using one or more metal bars, which remain in place and removed years later.

To reduce discomfort following surgery and improve recovery, we use an innovative cryotherapy approach to temporarily numb the nerves on both sides of the chest, often until the pain from surgery has subsided.

After surgery, half of our patients leave the hospital without requiring any narcotics, and most begin walking on the day of surgery and leave the hospital the next day.

A team centered around you.

Mayo Clinic pediatric surgeons have extensive experience in treating pectus excavatum and other chest wall deformities, performing even rare or complex cases. Your expert pectus excavatum care team includes pediatric radiology, anesthesiology, orthopedics, cardiology as well as nurses and child life specialists who may provide additional coping support, when appropriate.

We make appointments easy by scheduling appointments around sports and other family activities. If you need to travel to Mayo Clinic for treatment, we offer virtual follow-ups at home and work closely with your home team of doctors.
