Expert Scleroderma Treatment, Centered Around You

Because scleroderma, also called systemic sclerosis, can take so many forms and impact so many different areas of your body, it can be difficult to diagnose.  It’s important to get the right diagnosis the first time, and to have a whole team of experts working together for you.

When you choose Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, your multidisciplinary team of specialists will provide you with innovative, comprehensive care for scleroderma.

Our goal is to work with you to develop a therapeutic plan that helps you manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life.

We’re with you every step of the way.

Your team at Mayo Clinic will:

  • Review your medical history.
  • Conduct a comprehensive exam to identify the extent and severity of disease and systemic complications (vascular, joint, heart, lung, gastrointestinal, neurological, among others).
  • Develop a therapeutic care plan designed to meet your needs.
  • Coordinate any testing and consultations needed to expedite your care and simplify your life.

Your team will conduct a thorough evaluation for:

  • Scleroderma
  • Systemic sclerosis
  • Raynaud's (both primary and secondary)
  • Other fibrosing conditions – including eosinophilic fasciitis, scleromyxedema and morphea – that can mimic scleroderma

Expert care, provided with compassion.

Our experts work together to help you have the best possible quality of life.

To provide comprehensive care, your team will include scleroderma specialists as well any other specialists you may need, including Mayo Clinic experts in:

  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Gastrointestinal motility
  • Dermatology
  • Nephrology (kidney)
  • Cardiology pulmonary hypertension (heart)
  • Vascular medicine and wound care

For example, if you develop digital ulcers from severe Raynaud’s, our wound care experts will teach you the best ways to care for your wounds to improve healing. They also review arterial flow pumps (intermittent pneumatic compression pump therapy), which may help improve blood flow and can be particularly helpful when a person can’t tolerate traditional medicines for Raynaud's due to low blood pressure.

Physical therapists and occupational therapists can work with you to help you maintain mobility and strength.

Nurses can assist you with education about scleroderma and Raynaud's, as well as medications and their monitoring.

Innovation leads to better outcomes.

We apply innovation to diagnose, treat and manage scleroderma. This includes:

  • Nailfold video capillaroscopy, a state-of-the-art imaging technology to detect early vascular changes that may help diagnose scleroderma and other scleroderma spectrum disorders, such as mixed connective tissue disease, dermatomyositis and others.
  • Laser Doppler flowmetry to assess blood flow to the fingers, which can be compromised with scleroderma.

Scleroderma can affect many different parts of the body, so based on your specific needs your team may prescribe and manage medications to:

  • Dilate blood vessels
  • Suppress the immune system
  • Reduce digestive symptoms such as heartburn, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation
  • Prevent infections
  • Relieve pain

Mayo Clinic also participates in multicenter clinical trials for skin involvement, interstitial lung disease and Raynaud's. Our goals are to identify better treatments for scleroderma and provide options when conventional treatment is not effective. Mayo Clinic is an active member of the Scleroderma Clinical Trials Consortium.
