You Deserve an Expert Thyroid Cancer Team. We’re Here to Help

At Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center in Arizona, we routinely diagnose and treat all types and stages of thyroid cancer, including papillary thyroid cancer, follicular thyroid cancer, medullary thyroid cancer, anaplastic thyroid cancer, and metastatic carcinoma. Our thyroid cancer team ensures you receive the most accurate diagnosis and optimal treatment options while aiming to preserve thyroid function.

A diagnosis you can trust.

Our radiologists specialize in evaluating high-resolution ultrasounds. They can accurately determine whether a nodule is benign or suspicious for cancer. Our comprehensive assessment includes thorough lymph node evaluations in the neck, critical for treatment planning. Should a fine needle biopsy be required, our pathologists provide precise diagnoses, quickly.

Our pathology team can reach an accurate diagnosis in nearly all fine needle biopsies, with diagnostic rates far better than the national average. Your fine needle biopsy results are often available within hours, so those with cancerous nodules can promptly begin surgical planning.

In cases when a fine needle biopsy is inconclusive and diagnostic surgery is needed, we can provide a precise diagnosis and the right treatment during a single surgery, eliminating the need for additional procedures. Mayo Clinic is one of only a few centers able to accurately diagnose and provide treatment during a single procedure.

Getting a second opinion can give you peace of mind and confidence in your treatment plan. If you have been diagnosed at another center, our expert thyroid cancer team can clarify or confirm your diagnosis and treatment plan. We offer a streamlined appointment schedule, ensuring faster treatment.

Effective therapies with fewer side effects.

People diagnosed with thyroid cancer have an excellent prognosis. Surgical interventions, including thyroidectomy and thyroid lobectomy, typically offer the best opportunity for a cure. Studies show people who receive care from surgeons who perform at least 50 thyroid procedures each year have better outcomes. Surgeons at Mayo Clinic perform hundreds of these procedures every year, so you can feel confident you’re in expert hands. We prioritize:

  • Preserving thyroid function to facilitate recovery and long-term health
  • Safeguarding delicate nerves and focusing on minimal scarring
  • Minimizing surgical complications

Thyroid surgery is delicate, and access to expert surgical care matters. Our surgeons have extensive experience in all aspects of thyroid gland surgery, including minimally invasive incisions, partial and complete removal of the gland as necessary, nerve monitoring and treatment of neck lymph nodes with metastatic disease.

For non-surgical treatments, we provide methods such as radiofrequency ablation, ethanol ablation, and active surveillance. For comprehensive care, especially in metastatic cases, we offer additional treatment options, including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and hormone therapy.

Comprehensive cancer care for advanced diagnoses.

Mayo Clinic specialists offer unparalleled expertise for advanced or metastatic thyroid cancer cases. We understand the nuances of treating metastatic carcinoma and employ state-of-the-art procedures and treatments to ensure the best possible outcomes.
