At Mayo Clinic, we offer ongoing support and the solutions you need to successfully lose weight. Whether your goal is to improve a chronic condition, relieve uncomfortable symptoms or prepare for surgery, our team works with you to personalize your weight-loss plan. We look out for your emotional health and guide you toward a healthier lifestyle, offering standard and innovative treatments to help you get there.

Weight loss: Why choose Mayo Clinic?

Obesity is a chronic condition requiring lifelong medical care. With the right treatment and resources, you can reach a healthier weight and feel your best.

Under our care, you can expect:

  • Weight-loss procedures (bariatric) expertise. Our specialized physicians and surgeons perform hundreds of weight-loss procedures and surgeries a year. This extensive experience helps us individualize treatments, use advanced techniques to reduce pain and recovery time, and improve outcomes.
  • Leading-edge bariatric revisions. We revise previous bariatric surgery using advanced surgical techniques and noninvasive procedures, including transoral outlet reduction (TORe). In select cases, procedures like TORe offer a nonsurgical way to revise failed bariatric surgery and adjust prior solutions that weakened over time.
  • Individualized support. We approach obesity care from every angle before creating a personalized weight-loss plan. We get to know your habits, lifestyle, and weight-loss goals to create a plan for success that includes your overall health, goals, and preferences.
  • Access to innovative weight-loss solutions. Mayo Clinic is a leader in bariatric research. We are working to improve and combine procedures, treatment methods, and medication to achieve better long-term outcomes. You’ll have access to innovative clinical trials as a treatment option.
  • Multidisciplinary support. Besides physicians and surgeons, your care team includes bariatric nurses, mental health professionals, and nutritionists who provide personalized support, guidance, and solutions.
  • Long-term partnership. You can count on Mayo Clinic throughout your weight-loss journey. We offer virtual appointments and schedule in-person visits to minimize the time you need to spend away from home.

Your treatment plan may include:

Weight-loss medications.

Weight-loss drugs are not a quick fix for obesity. But they may offer the physical support you need while transitioning to a healthier lifestyle. Mayo Clinic offers a full range of obesity medications that can help you lose weight by:

  • Suppressing your appetite
  • Helping you feel full
  • Limiting the amount of fat your body absorbs

Bariatric endoscopy.

Our advanced endoscopy team specializes in bariatric treatments performed through the mouth. We use a thin, flexible tube (endoscope) with a camera and light to provide minimally invasive treatments.

Bariatric endoscopy is an appropriate treatment option for people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 to 40. Most people experience a total body weight loss of about 15% after an endoscopic procedure. Even five years later, many individuals can expect to maintain 10% weight loss or greater.

Advanced endoscopic procedures aren’t generally available at other hospitals. Benefits include less discomfort and a faster recovery than surgery. At Mayo Clinic, we offer:

  • Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty: Sutures in your stomach decrease its size, limiting how much you can eat.
  • Intragastric balloon placement: A saline-filled balloon placed in your stomach helps you feel fuller faster while eating less food.
  • Transoral outlet reduction (TORe): If weight relapse occurs after a previous bariatric surgery, we can tighten or adjust the stomach or pouch without additional surgery.

Metabolic (weight-loss) surgery.

Mayo Clinic is recognized as a Center of Excellence by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program. Our surgeons have the experience and expertise to treat people with complicated medical histories and revise previous bariatric surgery performed elsewhere. We use the latest technology and safest techniques to provide the best possible surgical outcomes.

Experts recommend weight-loss surgery for people with a BMI of 40 or more. It can help you lose 30% to 40% of your body weight. Most people can maintain their weight loss for many years. Surgeries we perform include:

  • Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass): Sewing your stomach into a smaller pouch and altering your food’s digestive path helps you eat and absorb less.
  • Gastric sleeve (sleeve gastrectomy): Removing a large portion of your stomach leaves you with decreased appetite and helps you eat less.
  • Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS): In this two-step procedure, we reduce your stomach by 80% and change the digestive path your food will take.
  • Single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S): This two-part surgery removes most of your stomach and reroutes the path of your food.
  • Revision surgery: Our specialized surgeons use advanced techniques to revise prior obesity treatments that fail due to weight recurrence, ulcers, malnutrition, reflux, gastrogastric fistulas, or chronic leaks.

Access to clinical trials.

Mayo Clinic is committed to innovation in obesity care. The medical research we take part in helps people with obesity live longer and healthier lives. Our physicians and researchers work together so that ideas move quickly from conception to clinical use. Your bariatric team offers you the chance to participate in clinical trials as part of your personalized treatment plan when appropriate.

Comprehensive support beyond your initial weight loss treatment.

Managing your weight after successful weight loss is as important as the weight loss itself. We offer ongoing follow-up care after weight-loss treatment because we know it is critical to long-term success.

  • Dietitians
  • Psychologists
