Pioneers in Hip Preservation.

The Young Hip Clinic at Mayo Clinic is dedicated to treating young people experiencing hip pain. Our goal is to preserve the hip and avoid or postpone the need for an artificial hip replacement until much later in life. As pioneers in innovative surgical techniques and collaborative team-based care, the Young Hip Clinic is always developing new treatment options to improve the quality of life for our patients, now and into the future.

The two most common conditions treated in the Young Hip Clinic are:

  • Hip Dysplasia
The hip socket (acetabulum) is too shallow and doesn't fully cover the joint. Pain associated with this condition is not necessarily activity related.
  • Femoroacetabular (Hip) Impingement (FAI)
The hip joint is too tight and the restricted movement damages the cartilage and labrum around the joint. This condition is usually aggravated by activity.

The Young Hip Clinic also treats:

  • Hip Instability
  • Hip Labral Tear
  • Perthes
  • Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE)
  • Avascular Necrosis

Leading the way in research and innovation.

Specialists at the Young Hip Clinic ensure our patients have access to all available options including the latest advancements in care and clinical trials. We have conducted extensive research that compares the long-term results of less invasive arthroscopic hip procedures versus conventional surgery. And we’ve found that minimally invasive treatment options are effective at preserving the hip and improving mobility, all while significantly shortening recovery times.

A dedicated team approach.

Patients at the Young Hip Clinic get access to a multidisciplinary team of specialists who work together to deliver tailored care to every individual we see. Pediatrics, Hip Reconstruction, and Sports Medicine specialists all consult with each other to evaluate the problem and determine the best treatment approach to correct the hip. We also collaborate to develop the right individualized rehabilitation plan that leads to faster than average recovery times.

Deep expertise. Remarkable results.

Our team of specialists bring their world-class expertise and extensive experience to the Young Hip Clinic to give our patients the right diagnosis and individualized treatment options that lead to better outcomes. Our purpose is not just to preserve the hip but to ensure that the young people who come here experiencing hip pain leave the clinic with their quality of life restored.
